Should The American Dream Be Solely About Monetary Gain

Should the American Dream be solely about monetary gain? The ability to live out life to the fullest, and enjoy the small moments as best one can, is surely one greater! To stare at adversity and choose to make lemonade (or cocoa,) from life’s lemons, is the true dream. A poor man on the sidewalk can enjoy the clean warmth of freshly washed clothes (Hongo). The cocoa drinker can have a meeting of the minds with a well-placed draft (Updike). Both men swiftly find the sorrow in life’s end. Both men know the fickle nature of existence, yet still smile. The man on the sidewalk is likely poor, due to his description as a thin man dressed in worn clothing. He is possibly an immigrant due to his use of foreign words when witnesses try to comfort him (Hongo). Is his death meaningless? Surely, but his life couldn’t be. Not everyone can be a Bill Gates, or a Denzel Washington, or an Oprah. The inherent skill set in the wildly successful, isn’t present in every human being, but this doesn’t preclude us from enjoying the fruits of our labor. This doesn’t prevent us from finding enjoyment in the challenges of life. Success is not the only measure of one’s identity. This is apparent when a moment with his fresh clothing warms not just his hands, but his existence. He glows in the flash of the setting sun, a symbol of this man’s glowing happiness. Even though he is a poor man, and likely far from his old home, he takes time to enjoy the small victories. Although that was the main storyline of the movie, it had many things to build up to him becoming a photographer. In this â€Å"city of god†, Rocket and another guy named â€Å"lil ze† both grew up together in a neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro. Ever since then, he started his own gang and needed to be the top of everyone. He needed to have everything. For example, there’s one part in the story where someone that he hated (knockout ned) was in the paper, and he wasn’t. He got furious at that one little thing. Why? because of his greed that he had. Compared to Rocket, where he has little greed, he appreciates the things that he is given. If Rocket was so greedy, he wouldn’t have been this famous that he is now. It kind of reminds me of the presidential election that’s going on right now. Every candidate has greed. They need to have the most top-notch thing before the other candidate gets it. We all can’t help it, because the world is filled with this thing called greed. Because Lil Ze had so much greed, he killed innocent people so that he could get money and become number one in the gang industry. I don’t understand how people can’t just be more like Rocket. Although Rocket grew up in a bad environment, it didn’t mean he had to live his whole life like that. Overall, this movie’s theme is all about greed and what you do with it. I would give this movie a 5 out of 5. Although killings not worth the money, watching this movie is worth the money.
